The announcement that Facebook would be implemented to its popular instant messaging service, the protocol XMPP (to understand, the same as google talk ) dates back to May 2008, but the promises were predicted to be maintained. During the wait, some developers have created some plug in to allow their client favorites ( Pidgin and Kopete to be precise) to connect also to chat with the methods Faceook not "standard", but never worked in duty. Yesterday we received word from Facebook official blog of the XMPP protocol that was finally implemented in the engine of Facebook chat!
And then?
So now we can all chatting happily, see who enters and exits the chat, stay in touch with friends on Facebook ... without going on Facebook!
XMPP protocol is in fact supported by many IM clients for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Many phones have the ability to link IM services using this protocol, but there are also programs to download to mobile devices that do not support it natively.
We see for example how easy it is to configure Kopete to join the Facebook chat:
Open settings and Kopete on posizioniamoci account. We click on the addition a new Jabber account and choose among those available
|
| Viewed Kopete supports those services? |
next go to the specific settings for your Facebook account
|
| of course, replace the asterisks with your name on facebook |
Now you only need to go there forward and you will see your Facebook friends from the main Kopete. For me now works much better on the chat site ...
Kopete, like most of the software released with KDE SC, is available for Windows and Mac OS X. Kopete and other software to install KDE on Windows go to this address . It is in English but there is a big button that will allow you to download a program that in turn will help in the installation of KDE programs on your computer. For OS X instead you must use MacPorts , CONUN simple command that will allow you to install many open source software such as Kopete!
Other interesting XMPP client that you can freely download and use on your PC:
There are also other ... search with Google!
