IT - Facebook chat with Kopete. We're almost there!

pious soul has accepted the demand of users Kopete and started to implement a plugin to allow connection with Facebook Chat, the instant messenger for KDE (which among others already supports MSN, Yahoo and Gtalk). The status of the plugin is not likely to see him in a public warehouse, but as Duncan says in his blog, the plugin is almost ready and already up and running with only a few parts to file. In practice, being optimistic, I would hope that This plugin makes its official entry in KDE after the release of version 4.3, scheduled for late July, as the same is now in a state of hard freeze that does not allow the addition of new features (we're already at version Beta). The request for this plugin on bugs.kde.org is now a year old, but has not been implemented prior to the announcement by way of wanting to support the facebook chat protocol Jabber standard, already used for example by Google Gtalk and its already supported by Kopete. But since the announcement followed hard facts, Duncan decided that we could not wait any longer given the fact that Facebook has become the means by which more and more people keep in touch. I really hope that Kopete will officially receive this functionality as other instant messaging programs to multiple protocols, such as pidgin are already able to use the chat service of the most popular social networks.

IT - Photo Contest for KDE 4.3 wallpaper

Nuno Pinheiro, from his blog, made it known that for KDE 4.3, scheduled for the end of July, was held a photo contest to add images to the default set of wallpapers that will be included in the release. Nuno personally will choose two of the best shots that arrive by email and will have the following characteristics:
  • minimum size 1920x1200
  • identifiable author ¹
  • released under the LGPL v3 ¹
Nuno also know that does not publish the photos are not selected. By doing this the author of the image will then be free to change the license of the photo is not selected and still publishes under other term. The images will be delivered by email within a week from the date of publication of the article in his blog (ie by next Sunday, 05/24/2009). Nuno choices will be made public within days. I would not publish the email address of Nuno on my blog, if you're interested go read the original post .

¹ This information can be inserted into the body of the email or in the metadata of the images using software such as digiKam. It is preferable that the license that the author should be declared in two ways.

IT - Night Shift

Here, as usual, there is someone that I ruined your day. Today is the turn of cyberorg that comes to mind is the fact wonderful idea to make the turn and resurrect Jesus of beryl, the first fork of compiz, designed that led to the famous cube on the desktop Linux world . The story is not very complex, compiz is built for window management and representation 3D desktop, his team has had some friction from which the project was born Beryl. After a few months this duplication of effort and labor has finally had a glorious end in reunion compiz-fusion, at present only become Compiz.
The reason to get up and walk Lazarus seems to be excessive heaviness that compiz is becoming as you create new plugin (AKA effects), but fair criticisms have already been moved as the not very complicated idea not to activate the effects are not used or that weigh the system in use, or how to make ubuntu that starts with a minimal set of effects, provided that the graphics card is able to support them. My idea is that every minute devoted to the resurrection of Beryl is thrown away as one minute and given the status of other projects that need a hand also in openSUSE project which is the author of the blog is an active member.
course, then everyone is perfectly free to do as he pleases, his time is passing and I do not even want to say to someone's head, and an experienced developer pergiunta, what should or should not do. The thing that saddens me is that I see other parts of the landscape Desktop on Linux have as much of that needs a little 'of affection by some clever developer who just do not understand why, as in this case, who is able to hand spends his time in duplicate things that exist already!
